A man who was shot during a “No Kings” protest in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday has died in the hospital, authorities confirmed.
“The victim was not the intended target, but an innocent bystander taking part in the protest,” Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd stated during a press conference on Sunday.
Police identified the victim as 39-year-old Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, a resident of Utah. The state medical examiner will determine his official cause of death.
According to police, 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa, also of Utah, allegedly approached the crowd around 8 p.m. while brandishing a firearm.
Two individuals in neon vests—believed to be part of the protest’s “peacekeeping team” and carrying handguns—moved to intervene.
Detectives learned during interviews that the peacekeepers saw Gamboa move away from the group into a hidden area behind a wall, which they found suspicious. One peacekeeper reported witnessing Gamboa pull an AR-15-style rifle from a backpack and begin handling it.
The peacekeepers drew their weapons and ordered Gamboa to drop the rifle, according to a police statement. Instead, witnesses said, Gamboa raised the firearm and ran toward the crowd on State Street in a shooting stance.
“One of the peacekeepers fired three rounds, hitting Gamboa and, tragically, striking the bystander who later died,” Redd said.
Neither police officers nor Gamboa discharged their weapons.
Gamboa, who suffered a minor gunshot wound, was later discovered “hiding in a group of people,” Redd added. Officers recovered an AR-15-style rifle and a gas mask nearby.
Police say they have probable cause to believe Gamboa acted with “depraved indifference to human life,” knowingly creating a deadly risk that resulted in the death of an innocent participant. Read More…..
