Queens community mourns 15-year-old Jaden Pierre at emotional vigil following his murder

A Queens community witnessed the deep grief of a mother on Monday night as she mourned her “baby,” 15-year-old Jaden Pierre, who was fatally shot at a park last week.

Hundreds gathered at Roy Wilkins Park on April 20, where Jaden’s mother, Shanelle Weston, broke down in tears during an emotional vigil for her son. Residents also called for swift justice, urging police to arrest the suspect before community members take matters into their own hands.

The crowd filled a basketball court near Merrick and Baisley Boulevards—just steps from where Pierre was beaten and shot during a water balloon fight on April 16. Gospel music played as attendees honored his life, with many visibly overcome by grief.

People of all ages wept, held one another for support, and prayed together. Parents comforted their children while others raised their hands in sorrow and disbelief.

Jaden’s father, Gardy Pierre, spoke through a microphone, expressing his love for his son in an emotional tribute.

“I love you, Jaden, I love you with everything in me—my heart, my blood, my soul, everything from my head to my toes,” he said.

Weston collapsed in anguish during the vigil and was supported by Attorney General Letitia James, who attempted to comfort her. James told the crowd that law enforcement believes they know who is responsible and urged the suspect to surrender.

“I would urge this gentleman to turn himself in,” James said. “Before the NYPD or the community gets to you, surrender. They know who you are and where you are.” Read More…
